Taittinger’s First UK Winery – The launch of Domaine Evremond

When Taittinger makes English Wine.. AKA Domaine Evremond
Last week @oz.clarke and I were invited to the press launch of Taittinger’s wine in THE UK – Domaine Evremond.
Here are our takeaways from this momentous day!
As you can see, we were both extremely impressed and excited for England’s future when tasting this wine. Although we only tasted a pre release sample which will be released in March – we can assure you that the juice is banging! I can’t wait to see how this wine develops a bit more in bottle.
It epitomizes perfectly the marriage of Champagne heritage combined with Kentish chalk, micro climate and its own viticultural practices. As mentioned, this wine is not trying to be a ‘Taittinger’ cuvee in the UK – it is an English wine made by Taittinger from England’s oldest apple orchards.
What also struck me on the day was the deep friendship behind this project. Domaine Evremond has been 9 years in the making between friends @champagnetaittinger and Patrick McGrath MW of @hatchmansfield. Since its inception they haven’t employed a single person apart from Patrick’s daughter, India. Everyone had to muck in and visiting this winery felt like visiting a family.
Friendship is also referenced in the name ‘Evremond’ as it refers to the only Frenchman to be buried in Westminster Abbey. He was a poet, soldier and dear friend of King Charles 11. The wine is rooted in a partnership with a deep sense of place and heritage. As Vitalie Taittinger said, the relationship behind the winery is based on a sustainable history of friendship. Long live the Entente Cordiale!
I will be posting more on Domaine Evremond but I just had to share the excitement which both Oz and I felt in those wind swept vineyards.
Huge congratulations @champagnetaittinger@hatchmansfield
