My Greek Summer Wine Highlights
Below are my top 5 Greek white wine highlights from the trip. There were a few others which I did not mention as sadly they are not available in the UK…YET! However, the below should give you a fun vinous trip around Kefalonia, Crete as well as main island Greece.
Who says one can’t experience Greek sunshine all year round?!
1. Domaine Gerovassiliou Malagousia = Aromatic, creamy hedonism £20.99
If you are a fan of a richer white wine style – such as Viognier or Chardonnay – this is the option for you. Fermented in new French oak barrels, this creamy rich wine is infused with exotic fruits and seductive floral aromas. Incredible with fusion food, cheese boards and sushi – we enjoy this at home throughout the year! It’s a long time family favourite.

2. Oenops Vidiano = Exhilarating and Textured £22.00
Vidiano is a white grape, originating from Crete and is considered to be an emerging star of the island’s wine. It manages to combine quince, peach and grapefruit intensity with exhilarating verbena freshness and this one has a gorgeous olive oil silky texture. We enjoyed it with grilled seafood but it would be fantastic with seafood pasta on colder nights!
3. Domaine Hatzimichalis, Alfega Lefkos (Malagousia/Robola/Sauvignon) – the super elegant and rare white blend – £14.50
An incredible unoaked blend of two native grapes plus Sauvignon Blanc from Central Greece. I adored the pulpy texture, vervy lemon zest acidity, lemon grass lift and golden fruit in the background. A super elegant and well rounded wine with a satisfying saline finish.
4. Domaine Efranor, Sclavos – The Instant Smile Maker – £22.00
This is a biodynamic wine, from old vines of two local grapes on Kefalonia. The Moschatela grape provides rose perfume, quince and baked peach fruit and a silky texture. Whereas, the Vostildi grape adds fantastic acidity and an opulent golden colour. This would be fantastic with a Sunday roast chicken, cheese board or veggie dishes. And the floral bouquet will add instant conviviality to any situation.
5. Ktima Biblia Chora Ovilos – The luxuriant Bordeaux White option – £23.00
A fantastic blend of Assyrtiko (50%) and Semillon (50%) from an estate run by two iconic Greek winemakers in Macedonia, Greece. The Assyrtiko substitutes as the Sauvignon Blanc in this Bordeaux inspired blend and both grapes are aged in French oak barrels for five months. The result: a super luxuriant yet elegant wine with creamy texture, grapefruit curd richness and a nutty undertone. Super stylish and one which I would love to serve in a blind Bordeaux tasting!
