Chapter 2 – The Family Feasting Wine

Family meals – no matter the feast – go on for hours. And there are some serious chats and feeding to make up for a year of us being apart! This stellar White Burgundy from Domaine Bernard Bonin can absolutely deliver on all accounts. It’s a gorgeously expressive and rich Burgundy, full of juicy baked apple, acacia honey and a dollop of creamy salted almond butter on the finish ???? It completely over delivers for the price! Thank you @ourglass.wine for sourcing this wine based on our family dynamics / palates!

I can already imagine the family table interactions around this wine. My father and I would be geeking out over its staggering value and how that relates to it coming from an unappreciated site right in between Puligny and Meusault. My vegan sister would be far more interested in the biodynamic principles behind it. And my mother…. well my mother quite frankly refuses to believe that wine Chat is necessary for wine appreciation. She would be thoroughly engaged in imbibing and would be waiting for the right moment to cheekily swap her empty wine glass for my father’s when he wasn’t looking.

Chapter 1 – My Reunion Wine

The word ‘Unprecedented’ has been bandied around a lot in the UK. For my UK ‘Unprecedented’ Christmas wines I chose extra special bottles for those simple moments which have now been acutely accentuated. I wanted my selection to do justice to the array of conversations, feasts and emotions which will be felt during this festive season and with @ourglass.wine ‘s expert team and portofolio, I think I cracked it!

Having been trapped in LA for the whole year, the reunion wine would need to be something joyous, fun and a family favourite. I had to choose Adi Badenhorst’s Secateurs Chenin Blanc. This is our ‘family house white’ – an old vine Chenin Blanc that gleefully exudes peaches and apricots but is deftly structured by orange rind brightness and acidity. Its screw cap means that it is easy access (brilliant!) and its personality can be enjoyed with or without food. I can imagine nothing more restorative after the LA night flight than family hugs, doggy kisses and a gleaming golden glass of Chenin….

Final chapter – The fireside chats and Leftover Turkey Companion wine

Fireside chats and picking at leftovers are the main Singer family household activities post Christmas Day. Chats can range from the super serious and philosophical to the down right absurd usually accompanied with a myriad of cartoon like voices… Ahem…

I want a wine which can keep up with these conversation capers and this gorgeous Nero d’avola and Frappato blend from one of Sicily’s most iconic producers, COS, does just that. I was delighted to see that @ourglass.wine has this amphora aged beauty on their list!

Simultaneously bright, juicy and bursting with cranberry fruit and huckleberry; it can suddenly take a turn and exude a primal meatiness which evolves into a soulful earthy sip, and then reverts back to fresh cherry fruit. It is pure Puck in a glass!

I couldn’t imagine a better vinous partner for whatever meaty topics may come up, which then inevitably subside into belly laugh filled ridiculousness. And when you take a conversation breather and frequent the kitchen, It also pairs fantastically with turkey leftovers and cranberry sauce. And don’t even get me started how deliciously it pairs with Devils on Horseback ( US translation : prunes wrapped in bacon!).

Thank you @ourglass.wine for enhancing our family Christmas. These wine moments are especially significant this year.
