My Kefalonia Highlights

Wow! I can’t believe that my trip to Kefalonia ended three weeks ago!

Lots of you saw how much I was enjoying myself and asked what I got up to.

Here are a few places which I adored.

Hotel:  Celestial All Suites Hotel – if you want to chill in a fairly remote part in the South of the island, have wonderful service, enjoy swimming in a 70m pool and be lots of wonderful little beaches and tavernas then I can’t recommend this hotel more. It is very relaxed whilst having good attention to hospitality AND all rooms have their own plunge pools.

The local beach taverna, Denis, also has great mezze, stunning beach views and does an awesome margarita.. plus their 3 euro 50 rosé was one of the best wines we tasted!

Beach: Forget Myrtos beach (read my newsletter for why!) and visit the super private and gorgeous beach of Alaties. Warning – this is not a beach club. You lay your beach towel down on the sand and have immediate, non tourist filled access to the prettiest cove. The Alati restaurant overlooks the beach and serves delicious seafood, has an extensive wine list and offers great cocktails for sundowners.

Beach club day: The White Rocks hotels offers a day pass so you can access its private beach (glorious), beach bar as well as fine dining experiences. Super cool!

Winery: Gentilini winery – see previous post about what makes this family run winery so special and how it made me appreciate the local white grape, Robola, in a whole new exciting way.

Seafood Restaurant: Vinaries Restaurant has the most beautiful seafront venue, you can choose your fish from the fish bar, they have an extensive wine list and it is where locals hang. Forget going to restaurants in Argostoli and experience all the senses of the sea here!

Wine Bar: The capital of Kefalonia is Argostoli . There are very popular beaches nearby ( Makris, Platis etc) but I personally would avoid those tourist traps and visit @oenopswinebar instead. They serve over 120 Greek wines – lots are local – and Dennis the owner will curate the most incredible tasting based on your palate.

There was lots of the island which I didn’t have time to explore (especially up North) but if you are up for a relaxing reset and tastes of the local culture without the tourists – the above are a fun starting point.

What I would do for next time:

Stay in the Northern part of the island near Assos and Fiskardo ( beautiful port towns)

The Emelisse Resort comes highly recommended

Fiskardo: Eat at Tassias restaurant and Fishkardo. Shop at Anna Maria – apparently this is where Sarah Jessica Parker shops

Visit the smaller beaches near Fiskardo – Emplissi or Dafnoudi. I found Myrtos beach far too crowded and commercial for my liking!

Visit the West side of the island which is more barren. The West Platia Ammos beach is meant to be stunning and then go for a sunset dinner at Petani beach at Erasmia.

See the Melisanni or Drogarati caves on the East side of the island.

If I return to the Southern part of the island again, I would love to visit Spartia village and eat at the Olive lounge which is situated in the hills at the Castle of St George.
